KA24DE(T) the little truck engine that could.

Some people twitch and cover their ears when they hear about Nissan KA24 Engines and Turbo, to others its a symphony. I can imagine why most people who hear these terms run off to hide behind their SR20′s and RB’s most attempted to do it, failed hard and swapped for a new engine that came turbo from factory. Turbo KA’s are very fun when built correctly our main subject for today’s post will be Wes. A fellow military customer all the way from the Florida. After going through several “Shops” that could not get his KA setup right he was almost ready to throw in the towel fortunately for him and His S14.5 he found Me.  This is what Wes’ car looked like when he towed it in.

We pulled the engine out of the car as every time we started it sounded like a set of decepticons where having sex inside poor Wes’ engine. unfortunately we found beat rod bearings scored crank and over bored cylinder walls, this was a big no no, after hunting down a good Block and crank we got to business. Manuel over at Wayne’s Engine Rebuilders of Riverside California hooked us up with all the proper tolerances for a good High HP KA that will be able to rev to the Moon. like a kid on Christmas Morning I opened the Engine up to go over everything.

After closely inspecting all the parts, measuring piston ring end gaps, bearing clearances making sure all oil galleries are clean and free from any contamination, I started the block assembly. Rule of thumb for engine assembly is “if you can’t eat off of it, don’t install it” that goes for everything going into your engine and is a big reason why you have to cover all ports when opening an engine for inspection or manifold removals. No Contamination! I went ahead and Installed a set of CP 9:1 Compression Pistons, Eagle I Beam Rods, Clevite 77 Race Bearings with Clevite Assembly Lube. this would keep this KA Happy and Spinning for Miles and Events to Come. (We where able to salvage Wes’ piston’s from the last attempt of a build)

With the new rotating assembly all done the only way to accompany it was with a Brand new OEM Nissan Oil Pump, front main seal and rear main seal. and with that all buttoned up I moved forward to installing a fresh cylinder head. Wes Provided me with a Fully Built Brian Crower Stage 2 Head for his KA, a Cometic MLS Head Gasket and a set of ARP Head Studs. this KA is going to rock , all you fellas in Palm Springs keep an Eye out for Wes in his Mighty Machine it’s not your typical 240sx under the skin!

Finally Wes had one more request before taking her out to break her in before the Dyno Tune, he wanted proper fitting intercooler piping, and a properly mounted intercooler. His Intercooler of  choice was a massive 4″ S-Max Core with 2.5″ Mandrel bent Aluminum Hot Side and a 2.75″ Cold Side. all with a 3″ Aluminum Intake with an HKS filter to suit the Greddy turbo

intercooler piping the car was towed in with and no air intake.

Bardabe Performance Intercooler Piping all done.

A Properly mounted S-Max FMIC

Word on the street says that Wes has decided to upgrade the Greddy Turbo and manifold to suit his engine better with something with a bigger punch, Dyno numbers coming soon!!!!
